A Personal Reflection on Deadlines, Dedication, and Remembering to Live
October 31, 2026
Well, Happy Halloween to me! π
While everyone else was enjoying costumes, candy, fall festivities, scary movies, and everything that makes Halloween fun, I spent my entire day doing something completely different.
Working.
Not decorating. Not enjoying a beautiful fall afternoon. Not treating myself to something special. Not even taking a moment to enjoy the last day of October.
Just sitting in front of a computer, trying to meet another deadline for work.
And the crazy part? It wasn’t even a regular workday.
It was Saturday.
A Saturday that should have belonged to me.
π When Your Job Follows You Home
There’s something exhausting about having a job that doesn’t seem to end when you clock out.
You leave the building, but the responsibilities follow you. The deadlines don’t care that it’s the weekend. The unfinished tasks don’t care that you have plans. And that little voice in your head keeps reminding you of everything that still needs to be completed.
So, instead of enjoying Halloween, I found myself checking things off a never-ending to-do list.
One task turned into another. One hour turned into three. Before I knew it, the morning had disappeared, the afternoon was gone, and the evening was slipping away.
And there I was, still working.
I kept telling myself, “Just a little bit longer.”
But how many times have I said that?
How many weekends have I sacrificed because something needed to be finished?
How many times have I put my own happiness on hold because work came first?
π The Halloween I Didn’t Get to Enjoy
I actually love this time of year.
There’s something special about fall. The changing leaves, the cooler weather, the cozy evenings, the decorations, and the feeling that comes with slowing down as the year begins to wind down.
October is supposed to be a month of enjoying those little moments.
But today, I barely noticed any of them.
I didn’t get to enjoy Halloween the way I wanted to because I was too busy being responsible.
And yes, I know that deadlines matter. I know that my work is important. I know that people depend on me.
But somewhere between being dependable and being dedicated, I started wondering:
When do I get to depend on myself to make time for me?
π Being Responsible Shouldn’t Mean Missing Your Life
One thing about me is that when I commit to something, I want to do it well.
I don’t like leaving things unfinished. I don’t like disappointing people. And I certainly don’t like feeling as though I haven’t done my best.
But I’m beginning to realize that this mindset can become exhausting when there’s no room for rest.
Because there’s always going to be another deadline.
Another project.
Another responsibility.
Another reason to say, “I’ll enjoy myself when I finish this.”
But what happens when you’re never finished?
What happens when life keeps moving while you’re sitting behind a computer trying to catch up?
Today reminded me that being a hard worker and having a fulfilling life shouldn’t be two things that compete with each other.
I can care about my career without sacrificing every moment of my personal life.
And I can be dedicated without being constantly available.
π October Taught Me Something
As I sit here on the final night of October, I’m thinking about how much of my time and energy I’ve given to my responsibilities.
I’ve spent so much time making sure things were completed, organized, documented, and submitted.
But what about the things I wanted to do for myself?
What about the places I wanted to visit?
The peaceful mornings I wanted to enjoy?
The little adventures I kept putting off?
The moments when I simply wanted to do absolutely nothing without feeling guilty?
Those things matter, too.
Maybe they don’t come with deadlines or reminders on a calendar, but they are just as important.
Because life isn’t supposed to be one long assignment.
And I don’t want to look back one day and realize that I spent all my best moments working.
β¨ A Different Kind of Halloween Lesson
Today wasn’t filled with costumes, candy, or celebrations.
Instead, it was filled with responsibilities, computer screens, and the pressure of getting things done.
But perhaps Halloween gave me something else this year.
A reminder.
A reminder that my time is valuable.
A reminder that rest isn’t something I have to earn.
A reminder that I deserve to enjoy my weekends without constantly thinking about Monday.
And most importantly, a reminder that my life deserves the same attention, effort, and commitment that I give to my job.
I don’t regret being a dedicated person.
I don’t regret caring about the quality of my work.
But I am starting to regret the moments I’ve missed because I convinced myself that everything else could wait.
π» November, I’m Choosing Me Too
As October comes to an end, I’m making a promise to myself.
I want November to look different.
Not necessarily less productive, but more balanced.
I want to make room for quiet mornings, peaceful evenings, spontaneous outings, and moments that don’t involve a deadline.
I want to enjoy the season instead of watching it pass by from behind a computer screen.
I want to stop feeling guilty for taking time to myself.
And I want to remember that I’m more than my job title, my responsibilities, and the things I accomplish.
I’m a person who deserves to enjoy the life she’s working so hard to build.
So, Halloween 2026, you may not have turned out the way I wanted.
I didn’t get the relaxing Saturday I deserved.
I didn’t get to enjoy the day the way I had imagined.
But I did gain a little perspective.
And maybe that’s something worth carrying into November.
Because next time a holiday rolls around, I don’t want my biggest accomplishment to be meeting another work deadline.
I want to have memories that have absolutely nothing to do with work.
The deadline may have been met, but the day is gone. And that’s time I can never get back.
Here’s to learning that every moment doesn’t have to be productive to be meaningful.
Here’s to enjoying life while we’re living it.
And here’s to remembering that sometimes the most important thing on our to-do list is simply:
